Florida compared to Martin County

Since the Martin County Healthy Start Coalition opened its doors in 1993 there has been a dramatic decrease in the number of babies born preterm or at a low birth-weight.

This progress can be attributed to the increasing number of women who are seeking prenatal care earlier in their pregnancies.

The percentage of women who sought prenatal care in the first trimester of their pregnancies through the Martin County Healthy Start coalition has steadily increased from 57.7 percent in 2007 to 72 percent in 2014.

Infant mortality rates have also decreased since the Martin County Healthy Start Coalition began assisting mothers throughout Martin County. In comparison to the entire state, women in Martin County have had healthier births and since 2007 infant mortality has decreased from 8.4 per 1,000 births in 2007 to 6.3 per 1,000 births in 2014.
